Ever since I was a young girl, I have loved to put things together and create beauty. Watching a movie about Maria Martinez in 4th grade, who would build a mound of dung over her clay pots and smolder them for hours. Visiting Mesa Verde with my family in 5th grade, fascinated by the ruins and ancient Indian ceramics. Experiencing Raku (Japanese firing technique) in high school, ignited by this process. These early influences have stayed with me all of my life.
My pieces are formed using hand building techniques including coils, slabs, pinching, paddling and scraping the clay. I’m drawn to artifacts, green/orange moss on rocks, ancient surfaces, birds and lizards. Clay surfaces are decorated with simple colorants and completed using pit firing and raku techniques to create ancient and organic effects.
Originally, I am from Maryland however my life has taken me to Madison, Boston, Santa Fe, Niwot, and now Durango & Mancos, where the confluence of ruins/ancient ceramics, rivers, genuine people, beautiful landscapes, sunshine, and love have captured me.
